10 Video Game Villains That Don't Say A Word

If Pyramid Head could talk, would you wait around to see what he had to say?

The concept of the silent protagonist is almost baked into the medium of video games. By saving on writing dialogue or hiring voice actors, the argument for the silent protagonist is that it allows the player to project their feelings onto the character, and therefore, offer more freedom of choice.

Villains, however, never seem to stop talking. Ever. Not even for a second. From dire threats to dramatic monologues, the villains are what drive the heroes. The more they say, the more we, as players, understand. And the more we understand, the more we have to react to.

But it sure does suck the mystery out of them.

Enter the silent antagonist. More forces of nature or cosmic horrors, these are ten villains who defy our need to fully understand them. All we know is that we have to stop them, and find a way to do it with as little information as possible.

10. Yami (Okami)

The yin to Amaterasu's yang, Yami was a dark god and the incarnation of all that is evil, just as Amterasu was to all that is good. It's appropriate, then, that neither of these all-powerful deities was capable of speaking or communicating much in any way. This was especially true in Yami's case.

Yami was responsible for the darkness spreading over Nippon, pulling the strings of the many demon lords Amaterasu faced along her journey. Pretty impressive for a big fish in what was, essentially, an armored fishbowl. Yami was basically Bob the Killer Goldfish from Earthworm Jim, but, you know... actually did things.

Though capable of changing form, from a mini-death star to a giant hand to a full-blown mecha suit, just remember: Though Yami was the incarnation of death, decay and malevolence... he was also a fish in a bowl.
