2. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

When the player first boots up Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, it seems like a pretty familiar - if enjoyable - homage to both the Indiana Jones movies and, by extension, its gaming forebear Tomb Raider.

But despite the frothy, larger-than-life globetrotting action on offer, it stays relatively grounded for the most part.

That is, until the game's 17th chapter, "The Heart of the Vault," when Nathan Drake comes face-to-face with the Descendants: a horde of undead, demonic creatures descended from Spanish colonists.

While there were some sly hints throughout the game of more out-there horrors to come, it still feels so hilariously divorced from the comparatively quaint and breezy adventuring of the story's preceding hours.

It's a stark tonal shift which left some fans understandably scratching their heads, though given the series' overarching inspiration from Indiana Jones, it's not entirely out of place either.
