When it comes to never ending-endings, the Metal Gear franchise is an embarrassment of riches. The series has built a reputation on its record-breakingly long cutscenes; sporting complicated and convoluted plots that take hours to wrap up. While many entries in the franchise fall pray to this habit, it€™s Metal Gear Solid 4 that is perhaps the most extreme example, especially in its final moments.

'Succinct' is the last world you would ever use to describe Metal Gear Solid 4€™s ending. From the moment the final battle with Revolver Ocelot begins, this conclusion runs over an hour long. That€™s nearing the length of a feature length film. Characters drone on and on explaining various plot points and waxing poetic about this and that. It just keeps going and going, and it€™s all told through cutscenes, which can be an endurance test, especially when it feels like there is no end to the ending in sight.

Metal Gear Solid 4 does have a lot of story to tell however, and so its inability to conclude in a timely fashion is understandable. Still, video games have the most diverse set of tools with which to tell a story, and so you have to wonder if this game could have done so in a way that doesn€™t wear on your patience.
