10. Hatred
Hatred is one of the most controversial video games of the last decade, essentially a "murder simulator" in which the player controls a nameless mass killer as he launches on a hateful "genocide crusade" to kill as many people as possible.
While many of the villains on this list are at least basically charming or funny, Hatred's gun-totting player character is, quite simply, a festering pustule of, well, hatred.
The game was reportedly conceived as a reaction against political correctness in video games, and consequently the reaction from most of the gaming press was one of both disgust and exasperation.
Without any rhyme or reason for the game's wanton murder, Hatred may well have offered up one of the most unarguably despicable video game protagonists of all time.
