10 Ways The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker Is Secretly A Masterpiece

4. Dungeon Design

Dungeons have always been an essential component of any Zelda adventure. If you're not breaking pots and interacting with kooky characters in the overworld, you'll be slaying enemies and solving puzzles in one of many dungeons.

The simple fact is this: you're going to spend a lot of time there, and if the design of said locations are dull or uninspired, the end product is going to be greatly affected as a result. Thankfully, the diversity of settings and undeniable level of polish in the puzzle mechanics makes each dungeon as enjoyable as the last.

From luscious woodlands to towering structures inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece, The Wind Waker manages to take the otherwise monotonous, repetitive dungeon structures and use atmosphere, sound design and challenging puzzles to break the cycle.

Ocarina of Time's water temple is notorious for all the wrong reasons, Majora's Mask is not at all known for its exemplary dungeon design and earlier entries in the series were unable to make such locations feel memorable.

The Wind Waker sets the bar for all future titles to compare themselves against when it comes to creating the perfect collection of dungeons. None have managed to top it.
