10 Worst Video Game Endings Of All Time

By Shaun Munro /

2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

A fantastic, divisive and ultimately frustrating game that tested fans' faith to the Metal Gear brand, Sons of Liberty has Hideo Kojima shooting for philosophy and not really succeeding, instead boring many players with a hyperbolic rant about humanity that diminishes the visceral impact of that epic final boss fight. Once we get over the fact that we have to play 90% of the game as Raiden, we warm to him and start to enjoy the game, and then things close on a fairly despicably patriotic ending, which feels horribly tacked on, especially when you consider how close to 9/11 the game was released. But that's not even the worst thing; it's the over-long philosophical diatribe that Kojima has his characters going on, even interspersing a lot of live action clips just to make things even more weird. While it's easy to appreciate Kojima's attempt to push the envelope, it wasn't a total success here, especially when considering how much easier some of his more daring sleights of hand earlier in game went down.
