Though God of War made a point of deviating away from the Blades of Chaos and into a new Leviathan Axe that could be flung, recalled, embedded in heads and used to chop foes into matchsticks, there comes a point where Kratos is told he'll need to embrace his "older self".

Cut to a lengthy, affecting scene where he sails down a ravine, contemplating the fact he's going to have to re-embrace the worst parts of his past, and eventually you have the Spartan warrior picking up the blades that caused so much destruction once again.

In gameplay-terms is where things get crazy though, as you realise Sony Santa Monica found a way to traverse the isometric hack n' slash tropes of yesteryear into an over-shoulder model with infinitely more impact.

You'll lasso guys with one chain whilst battering another, turn into a full-on tornado of hellfire and feel a nostalgic rush this series has never seen before while you do.

It's moments like these that make God of War the best game of the year.
