12 Most Impactful Games Of The PS4, Xbox One And Nintendo Switch Era
2. Star Wars Battlefront 2 - No More Microtransactions
In 2017, Star Wars Battlefront 2 became one of the most controversial Star Wars games ever made, courtesy of Electronic Arts and their incessant need to put microtransactions in every game they make.
Although the game was praised for its multiplayer, gameplay and visuals, it was slammed for giving players in-game advantages that could be purchased with real money. After an EA community member commented about the issue on Reddit, it became the most downvoted comment in the website's history, drawing more media attention to the issue and forcing EA to remove the microtransactions.
But the damage had already been done. The backlash against microtransactions made it into mainstream media and had caught the attention of numerous politicians around the world. This resulted in Belgium and The Netherlands taking legal action against microtransactions and loot boxes while America and the United Kingdom are getting close to doing the same.
It would not be surprising to see multiple studios attempting new forms of monetisation with their games next generation, but no matter what happens, Star Wars Battlefront 2 will always be remembered as the game that started this new mass movement against microtransactions in video games.
Well done EA.
