One area in which the PS4 was quite rightly criticised when compared to both the Xbox One and Wii U was the distinct lack of exclusive launch titles: the platform used third party software as a sturdy crutch while not especially having much home-grown content to write home about. As for the exclusives, Mark Cerny's long-hyped platformer Knack was victim to middling reviews and promptly fell off a cliff (though it surprisingly hasn't landed on the Instant Game Collection yet), while Killzone: Shadow Fall received modestly positive reviews but was regarded more as an impressive tech demo than a great game in its own right. It all fell to Housemaque's old-school side-scrolling shooter Resogun to take the lion's share of the praise, earning a whopping 84 on Metacritic, a slightly embarrassing fact for Knack and Killzone considering that it came free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, whereas they cost £50 each at launch. Numerous critics drew attention to this fact, and though it was largely at the expense of the big studios, it was also a fine tip of the hat to indie game developers everywhere.
