The game that birthed the derisive 'walking simulator' term back in 2013, Gone Home is The Fullbright Company's exploration of what it's like to move into a new house, in a new town, with new people and a whole new life to get to grips with. It's all told through you playing as Kaitlin Greenbriar, a returning gap year student whose family have relocated whilst she was away - only for her to return and find the new house seemingly empty, only a note pinned to the front door from her sister to get things started. The excellence in Fullbright's design is how it then plays with your expectations - those traits and gameplay quirks you've subconsciously built up over the years when it comes to exploring environments in first-person. An incredibly subversive and rewarding guiding hand takes you between many interactive elements to various audio recordings, but mainly allows you a sense of freedom in exploring the house. All of this whilst subtly pulling the strings the whole time, unfolding one of the best told stories in gaming history.
