By this point in MGS 4, Old Snake is so run-down that even going down the stairs leading to the microwave tunnel of death proves to be a bit of a challenge. With his body deteriorating at a rapid rate, the old man forces himself on his hands and knees through the hot, radioactive tunnel to infect the Patriot's AI with a virus. Even Frodo Baggins would say no to such a perilous journey. Split-screen is cleverly used to bring all of MGS 4's plot threads together in this moment, showing Mei Ling, Meryl, Otacon and Raiden fighting their own battles to rid the world of the Patriots. The sequence goes on just long enough to make you think that Snake might snuff it here after all, especially when he almost stops moving completely towards the end.
