13 Most Anticipated 2021 Video Games Ranked - Did They Live Up To The Hype?

5. Shin Megami Tensei V

Shin Megami Tensei may have been usurped in popularity by its spin-off series, but SMT V is a mighty flex that proves the old master still has plenty of life in it yet.

Developers ATLUS certainly can't be accused of rushing their games - it's been eight years since Shin Megami Tensei IV, and eighteen since the third entry in the series - but they certainly don't rest on their laurels. Each numbered entry in the SMT saga has been an improvement on the one before, and that pattern continues here.

The story - sparse as it may be in comparison to more traditional JRPGs - is the best it's ever been (with the exception of the 3DS' stonkingly good SMT IV: Apocalypse), but it's the series' exquisitely challenging combat that remains the star.

Managing your ever-expanding collection of demons, deities and abominably cute snowmen (Hee-Ho!) into the ultimate fighting force remains as enjoyably addictive as ever, and the new additions such as the Magatsuhi Gauge and the Glory system are welcome evolutions to SMT's dungeon-crawling formula.

The Megami Tensei series may have fallen out of favour in recent years, but for fans of old-fashioned JRPGs SMT V is as good as it gets.
