3. Sony Holds Fortnite Accounts Hostage

Epic Games

Sony has been widely criticised by gamers and press alike for quite some time regarding their reluctance to allow cross-play with Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and public scrutiny intensified with the release of Fortnite on the Switch over the summer.

Fans hoping to log into their existing PS4 Epic accounts on the Switch found themselves locked out due to Sony effectively restricting progress to the PS4 and platforms they weren't actively competing with (PC and mobile).

Sony received an avalanche of flak, to which they offered a typically effete, unconvincing response until finally buckling under the pressure in late September.

That it took almost three months of being pilloried for Sony to realise that such anti-consumer practises aren't in their interests or "for the players" is staggering.

Though some have praised Sony for relenting, it's absolutely not a praise-worthy decision because it clearly shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.
