There was some hope ahead of AW's release that, with a new developer at the helm, the single-player offering might change up a little by building a campaign mode that wasn't just the same Greatest Hits collection that Ghosts was, and also last longer than the embarrassingly short 4-5 hours that the majority of the games clock in at. While the campaign was itself a vast improvement over Ghosts, serving up a singular vision that benefited hugely from Kevin Spacey's presence, it still only lasted around 6 hours (or slightly longer on higher difficulties), likely because Sledgehgammer were aware that some people don't even play the single-player, and most of the dev attention is instead focused on getting the multiplayer right. What the next game needs is a more patient, character-driven approach to the story, taking on some ambitious new forms, and making the war feel like a brutal journey rather than a quick flash-in-the-pan.
