Pre-release, it really seemed like ARMS was destined to have a hard time with critics, given the seemingly limited nature of its gimmicky premise, and the fact that it looked like a game that belonged on the original Wii (conceptually rather than visually).

What a surprise it was, then, when ARMS was broadly praised by critics and gamers alike for its surprising level of challenge and deceptive depth.

While you might still be waiting for a price drop due to the fairly small amount of content (even the tutorial feels insubstantial), the ludicrously addictive online multiplayer is one of the Switch's best to date, and damn-near justifies the purchase by itself.

Far from the mediocre motion control beat 'em up many expected, ARMS makes the most of its central control scheme and distinguishes itself in a genre that so often settles for formulaic mediocrity. And again, that online mode is straight fire.
