Taking everything Valve have been experimenting with in the VR space - the various tech demos, 2016's The Lab etc - Alyx rolls them together to create a seamless out-of-body virtual reality experience.

You'll reach for parts of the environment to steady yourself, improvise inside combat scenarios using real-world instincts, or spend hours picking up and manipulating every inch of the environment.

All of this though, it just setting the table.

The real seven-course feast is seeing a veteran team of developers return to their biggest franchise.

Half-Life fans have been waiting for more instalments in this fiction for over a decade, and whilst Alyx can only plug in prequel segments alongside one HELL of a tease for the future, it's still more than enough to get your heart racing.

Sadly, Half-Life: Alyx's sales were eclipsed by those who watched it unfold on Youtube or Twitch, but going forward, expect Valve's low-key masterpiece to only garner more praise.
