Mass Effect 3 is a game that split gamers like no other in recent memory. Everything was centred around the fact that the ending to the game was woefully brief, only a couple of minutes long and served no satisfying purpose to most people. However, the whole GAME was the ending to Shepard's story. With the Reapers invading inner colonies and decimating the Earth, Commander Shepard is sent out into the galaxy to build an army and a super weapon capable of stopping them and ending the war. As Shepard reaches his final hurdle in starting the weapon on The Citadel, he is given a choice, destroy the Reapers, control the Reapers or merge synthetic and organic life into one glorious whole. Whichever you choose, the Citadel and Mass Relay network is destroyed, and Shepard passes into legend. Most players who reach this point will have sunk close to 200 hours into the series and seeing the various story lines come to a close is traumatic enough, but knowing that whatever choice you make has such a wide ranging effect on the universe you have invested so much time into makes it memorable and everlasting. The choices you make in all three games affect the overall ending and no franchise of games have ever come close to how well the Mass Effect saga ties its own world together.
