7. Borderlands Was Initially A Gritty, Realistic Sci-Fi

Looking more like something from the Metro series, the original debut of Borderlands gave way to a super-gritty, harsh aesthetic that in today's landscape has been done.to.death. Luckily, developers Gearbox decided to not follow the crowd and instead overhauled the whole game's graphics engine to employ the cel-shaded look that's become synonymous with the franchise. It's a shame Borderlands' level of graphics-appreciation doesn't extend further, as fellow comic book-shaded blaster XIII could really do with some more exposure.
