10. Far Cry Primal

Nobody really had high hopes for Far Cry Primal. An unnumbered spin-off releasing less than two years after the previous entry into the series, pretty much everyone expected Primal to be an overpriced expansion pack dressed up as a brand new game.

And to be fair, to an extent that's what it kind of is; after all, it even reuses much of the geography of the fourth game. But it's also a brand new Far Cry experience, with an exciting new Stone Age setting, a radically changed combat system and an entirely new storyline.

Also, you can tame wild animals from the era and have them do your bidding - what more incentive do you need?

With a focus on melee and ranged weapons (usually made up of hand-crafted clubs and spears), Primal completely does away with the jaunty gunplay that was always the weakest aspect of previous games, and is all the better for it.
