12. Wander's Sacrifice - Shadow Of The Colossus

The game that was so good, it afforded developers Team ICO an (ongoing) amount of time to produce the followup. Tying together many themes including environmentalism, fourth-wall scratching and a wondrously ethereal feel to everything, you played as Wander, a disparate soul attempting to cure his lover of a mysterious illness. You do so by essentially following the assumed rules of gaming; slaughtering everything in your way. However, the notion of why and how these tropes establish themselves is the story. The titular Colossi are essentially innocent wanderers themselves, and butchering them has forever tainted your own soul, resulting in the rug being that killing the Colossi will grant life to Mono, but such a thing requires a sacrifice - Wander's own life. The best bit comes as Wander is pulled into a spectral vortex as the game applies the climbing mechanics you were previously using to surmount the towering beasts, to clinging on for dear life. You're left to watch your formerly reliable grip meter drain all the way down, knowing you're reconciled to whatever's on the other side of the void.
