A top-down adventure game, Below has players taking control of a diminutive warrior as he explores a remote island. With its high level of difficulty and permanent death, the game has already been dubbed "the indie Dark Souls", though reportedly also incorporates elements from classic adventure games such as Zelda and Diablo. One of the most fascinating mechanics mentioned to date is that, if your player character dies, the next time you play, you can attempt to track down the previous adventurer and loot his corpse, which is particularly handy if you died with an especially great piece of equipment in your possession. It also happens to boast a fantastic visual style and haunting musical score, which will hopefully make Below one of the most atmospheric video games of the next 12 months.
