In the simplest terms, Cuphead is a side-scrolling platformer that puts you up against a gauntlet of bosses that all require fast reactions and perseverance. What makes this particular indie game stick out in a vast sea of similar games though, is its eye-popping art style.
The product of just two individuals (brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer), Cuphead's entire world draws inspiration from the iconic 1930s cartoons of Fleischer Studios (Popeye the Sailor and Betty Boop) as well as its contemporaries in order to recapture the magic of the period.
The fact that each animation is hand-drawn and every background hand-painted makes the Moldenhauer brothers' accomplishment all the more impressive.
Early impressions are that it plays like a dream too. Let's hope the new 2017 release date sticks this time, eh?
