5. Valiant Hearts: The Great War

What It's About: A puzzle adventure game set during World War I, in which the player controls numerous characters as they attempt to make it through the Great War, dodging gunfire, healing the wounded and so on. Why You Need To Play It: Because while there are dozens of military shooters about WW2, there aren't enough video games concerned with the First World War, especially ones as artful and tasteful as this. Valiant Hearts creates an easy emotional bond with its characters, best of all dog Walt, who is an invaluable helper throughout. What really makes this stand out aside from its beautiful art style is that it's a pacifist game for the most part: engagements with enemies are typically limited to knocking them out, so there's absolutely no glorification of a horrific real-life event here. Instead, the game is focused on its characters, typically ordinary people thrust into an impossible situation, and as such they're easy to relate to, all the way to the tear-soaked finale.
