It may have been a dual-tortoise race across all of 2014 for this generation's consoles and their respective developers to get off the starting line, but the second half of 2015 ushered in twin transformations into a couple of thoroughbred hares - ones which this year, are now positively sprinting.

New consoles, revamped old games, sequels, resurrected and forgotten projects given a new lease of life - Microsoft are even changing the very nature of what a console cycle 'is' by offering an incremental upgrade named 'Project Scorpio', coming in 2017.

However, that's all in the immediate or far-flung future (y'know? A future where The Last Guardian and No Man's Sky finally make it out of development?), so right now let's take stock of how 2016 has panned out so far.

18. Firing The BFG 9000 - DOOM

You knew it was coming, and they wanted to give it to you. Id Software's BFG (Big F'ing Gun) has been a staple of not only DOOM for years, but pop culture as well.

Heading into the 2016 reboot, about third of the way through the campaign you'll happen upon a sci-fi testing facility - one that houses an 'experimental weapon'. Reading into the data logs about how it was made and what it's potent power is capable of, eventually you'll wrench it out its housing and set about finding an enemy to blow apart.

Only, you don't find one enemy, oh no, you step into an entire room of them. And with DOOM's 60fps frame rate holding steady, you unleash the BFG's electric orb of destruction, tearing all and sundry into a thousand tiny pieces, only for a few seconds where genuine chunks of your former foes rain down all around you.
