After one of the most half-cocked, sputtering starts to a console race in gaming history, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo finally started pulling their fingers out towards the close of 2015, establishing a welcome momentum that carried across all of 2016, and thankfully, continues to this day.

Now we're halfway through 2017, the sense that every publisher and developer primed their finest projects for a later release is somewhat overwhelming, the likes of Zelda: Breath of the Wild going up against Horizon Zero Dawn or Injustice 2 versus Tekken 7 duking it out and forcing consumers to make some impossible choices.

All that said, 2017 furthers the feeling of a generation coming into its own, showing just how much the perception of this current cycle has changed since the shrugged shoulders and "This is all fine... but where are the truly great games?" of late 2013.

Hell, the Nintendo Switch would've been a laughing stock if not for Breath of the Wild; a testament to how one exemplary title can justify a system. Compare to the PS4 or Xbox One launching with their respective first-party offerings alone (Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Ryse: Son of Rome), and this entire generation could've gone the way of the Kinect.

It might have taken a few years to get going, but we're now enjoying a phenomenal run for pure creativity in gaming, the results being some of the finest titles of the decade. Starting with...
