The main character of the story is the demon hunter for hire, Dante; a white haired, trash-talking, gun-toting, sword-wielding badass. He’s hired for a job to kill a demon he suspects was responsible for the murder of his mother.

Gameplay focuses on fast-paced, stylish combat, with light to heavy sword attacks and short to long range weapon attacks. Dante wields two twin revolvers named Ebony and Ivory but he also carries a huge sword on his back named Rebellion. The game is divided into missions, where upon completion, a letter grade of A, B, C, D, and S, is awarded based on the player’s success.

This success is measured by the mission completion time, the number of red orbs acquired and the level of style achieved during the fights. The best part is the better you perform, the faster you get to Devil Trigger Mode, which sees Dante become a powerful demon with increased health, speed, strength and special abilities.

DMC got so popular it spawned a prequel, three sequels, an anime series and even its own comic book. Its success even earned Dante a spot as a playable character in the Marvel vs Capcom fighting game.
