Starting with the original friendship-destroyer - Mario Kart's various head to head modes have become the stuff of legend, and it's testament to just how immaculate the 1992 original's mechanics were, that very little has changed over the past few decades.

Even if you didn't get in on the Mario Kart 64 zeitgeist back in the 90s, copycats like Crash Team Racing or Sonic All-Stars Racing carried across all the base tenets of kart racing, further cementing just how monolithic an achievement this was. Scattered collectibles making everybody faster as the race goes on, side-swipes, power-ups, environmental obstacles to avoid or trigger on your foes - all of which are just sublimely implemented.
