For a while it didn't feel as though this year's release schedule was going to let up - so relentless has the first quarter of 2017 been, its opening salvo consisting of Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0 and Gravity Rush 2, only for Zelda: Breath of the Wild, For Honor, Horizon Zero Dawn and Nioh to follow. Mass Effect Andromeda, NieR: Automata, Persona freakin' 5 - all came from the same first quarter release window.

Going further back you've got Shadow of Mordor, Fallout 4, Until Dawn, Metal Gear Solid V, The Witcher 3 and plenty more. Yes, 90% of 2014's output was a wash, but all manner of developers are finally seeing their visions realised one after another, and there's a lot to love.

Phenomenal benchmarks in graphical design? Check. All-new fourth-wall breaking ways to play, bolstered by games that combine multiple genres into one? Check. Tons of indie games bending narrative conventions and experimenting with smaller budgets to produce even more ridiculous end products? Triple-check, and don't spare the side-scrolling pixel shooters.

Yes, this generation might have tripped over the starting blocks and face-planted the floor when it came to the likes of Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed Unity, but it's back up, those wounds are licked, and overall, this continues to be one hell of a race...
