As a developer forever juggling fame and infamy in equal measure, Rockstar Games have proven themselves to be no strangers to controversy or outrage. Nowhere is this truer than with their flagship Grand Theft Auto series, and it's from moments in these games that some of the studio's biggest complaints have arisen.

Over the nearly twenty year history, pretty much everyone has been offended, shocked or otherwise taken aback by something in GTA, and in the spirit of celebrating that near-the-knuckle humour and often unbelievable audacity, I'm here to bring you the very best of those moments. From crushed skulls to full frontal nudity, these are the twenty biggest WTF moments in Grand Theft Auto history...

Oh, and naturally a lot of this content will be more than a little unsavoury, so don't say I didn't warn ya!

20. Trevor Gets Brain On His Boot

When Rockstar introduced Johnny Klebitz as the leather-clad, biker lead of GTA IV's The Lost and Damned they introduced players to the latest in a long line of interesting protagonists for the series. As Vice President of the Lost MC, Johnny's struggle for and against power was a truly intriguing story and it made for a great campaign in the DLC.

Then, when Johnny appeared on Trevor's turf in GTA V, he was suddenly and unceremoniously beaten to death and removed from the series for good. After confronting the maniacal Trevor for sleeping with his girlfriend, Johnny was thrown to the floor and stamped on until he was unquestionably dead.

While the brutal method of death wasn't entirely shocking for a GTA game, the fact that a former protagonist could be so swiftly despatched raised real questions as to who in the current GTA world is truly safe. Rockstar proved that anybody could be killed. Now let's just hope they don't go all Game of Thrones on us in GTA VI...
