4. Phantump Used To Be Hansel (Or Gretel)
While we're on the subject of possessed Pokémon, we simply have to stop off for a retelling of how many believe that Phantump came to be. In its Pokédex entries across the sixth generation, we're told that ancient tales state that Phantump are actually old tree stumps possessed by the spirits of children who had died while lost in forests.
Okay, this is a chilling tale, but when you stop to think that this tale is based in a world where people actively encourage ten year olds to leave home alone and journey through forests to find Pokémon, then you really have to think this is just a bad place to live.
Not every aspiring Pokémon Master will be as lucky as the likes of Ash Ketchum, who seemingly never runs out of new friends to call on when he's in need.
