Anyone whose beaten Silent Hill 2 will know that there€™s somewhat of a twist towards the end of the game, a crucial revelation involving protagonist James Sunderland himself. You see, it turns out, you€™re your own worst enemy, quite literally. Silent Hill itself is a construct of your own guilt, and your own desire to punish yourself for the murder of your wife. Of course, James only murdered her to end her immense suffering, what with her being terminally ill and in constant pain, but regardless, he blames himself.

As such, James constructed a literal hell for himself, a place where his regrets could play out endless, an unending torture for himself to dwell in forever. The nurses actually represent James€™ repressed sexuality, and Pyramid Head is just one giant, phallic, masochistic symbol of self-imposed punishment.
