19. Homefront: The Revolution

There's no denying that Dambuster Studios' Homefront: The Revolution had some incredibly cool trailers before it launched in 2016. The 'This is Philadelphia' trailer in particular left a strong impression on those who saw it. Released in January 2016, it put the game's fictionalized version of Philadelphia front and centre, showing versions of familiar landmarks that reflect a city under occupation by North Korea.

It showed the lengths the resistance army were going to in order to fight back, with plenty of well-known landmarks transformed into a dystopian warzone that was begging to be explored. Strong visuals and voice acting helped to sell the idea that this was a story worth telling and a cause worth fighting, while the ruined landmarks and tense atmosphere painted The Revolution's Philadelphia as a picture worth exploring.

Unfortunately, when the game released, it was quite the opposite. Plagued by bugs and performance issues, Homefront: The Revolution turned out to be a bit of a mess. Critics used terms like 'derivative' and 'mediocre' to describe it, with poor AI and repetitive gameplay doing little to quash the criticism.

The game holds a meagre score of 54 on Metacritic, and time has done little to change most people's minds on it. The trailers did their job extremely well, but sadly, Homefront: The Revolution just couldn't follow suit.
