Half a decade before Shadow of Mordor came along and changed the Rings gaming landscape for good, there was Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

Built in mould of the original Star Wars Battlefront games, Conquest allows us to take control of the footsoldiers of Rohan, Gondor, Rivendell, Harad, Mordor and Isengard, waging the war at ground-level across all the iconic battlefields of the films, with a campaign that spans the major battles of the films and adds in a couple of extras - the Mines of Moria and Minas Morgul - for good measure.

Each class and warrior can get lost in the maelstrom of battle in the films, leaving us to focus on central characters with great chunks of the action of the battles serving as background to the plot, but not so in Conquest. This game takes you in deep to explore the battles close-up, playing as different classes and getting a hands-on feel for the warfare, making the battles all the more real when you see them onscreen. And those extra levels add that little bit more to the already bulging LOTR mythos.
