6. Dystopian Future - Splatoon

At first glance, the Splatoon games are colourful and chaotic shooters where teams of anthropomorphic squids and octopuses compete to cover arenas in ink. However, underneath the fast-paced gameplay is the shocking realisation that this critically acclaimed series take place in a post-apocalyptic future, thousands of years after humans became extinct.

Although these games never explicitly explain the history of this mollusc-ruled world, Sunken Scrolls hidden throughout the single-player campaigns heavily imply that humanity was wiped out by a climate catastrophe.

In the first game, players can find a scroll that refers to "creatures of the surface" who were "driven to extinction by rising sea levels", with another showing an image of fried shrimp believed to have been eaten by an "ancient creature." The most telling find, however, is a scroll that depicts a fossilised human skeleton playing the Wii U.

Splatoon 3 gave players a deeper insight into this universe's history by setting the campaign within the ruins of humanity's last civilisation.

Known as Alterna, this underground facility is home to various landmarks and relics such as a model car, a record player, and an umbrella, further confirming the grim reality about humanity's fate.
