20 Most Terrifying Video Game Enemies Of The Decade
20. Anglerfish - Outer Wilds (2019)
With its uplifting soundtrack, vibrant visuals, and engaging planets to explore, Outer Wilds is a charming and cosy space adventure that players are free to take in at their own pace. With a distinct lack of enemies to fight, this acclaimed and multi-award-winning release from Mobius Digital appears to be the furthest thing from threatening.
However, that changes as soon as players arrive at Dark Bramble.
An ominous planet covered in strange vines located on the outskirts of the solar system, this area functions as a maze where players must traverse interdimensional portals and thick fog. Crucially, though, they must also do so while avoiding a swarm of gigantic anglerfish.
With these fearsome fish being completely blind, players players are required to fly their ship as slowly to make as little noise possible. While the sight of their enormous teeth is terrifying enough, the glow from their lures is indistinguishable from the portals through the dense fog, meaning that players can easily fly straight into one.
This entire sequence is an exercise in nerve-shredding terror that marks a massive tonal shift from the rest of the game. After meeting these creatures, players won't want to visit Dark Bramble again.
