20 Most Terrifying Video Game Enemies Of The Decade

2. The Hunter - Dead Space Remake (2023)

Dead Space was a masterpiece of sci-fi horror when it released in 2008. Fifteen years later, Motive Studios took everything that made that title so impactful and expanded upon it in meaningful ways to give fans the most atmospheric and gnarly version of Isaac Clarke's ill-fated journey possible.

Nowhere was this transformation better felt than during the encounters with the notorious Hunter, which starred in the original's most heart-pounding sequences.

Whereas the other Necromorphs onboard the USG Ishimura can be killed by severing their limbs, this hulking mass of terror can regenerate, meaning that it's unkillable. With the player's only option being to slow it down long enough to narrowly escape, fleeing from this enemy remains as stressful as ever. Although the Hunter's appearances are more scripted in the remake compared to the stalker type enemy it was in the original, a new side quest exploring its backstory adds a layer of extra depth and intrigue to this unstoppable alien.

After everything the Hunter puts players through during this game, there are few moments in gaming as cathartic as when players finally get to put it down for good, knowing that it will never terrorise them again.
