20 PS2 Games That Still Hold Up
16. Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Jak & Daxter stood out immediately for its seamless open world and lack of loading screens, helping players remain immersed in this dynamic and connected universe.
The Precursor Legacy blended platforming and puzzle-solving with a cartoon-inspired aesthetic that was charming and timeless. Its fluid animations and diverse environments made players feel obligated to check every nook and cranny, setting a benchmark for 3D platformers.
Furthermore, the game excelled when it came to storytelling and character. Jak’s silent but determined presence balanced perfectly with Daxter’s witty dialogue and comedic timing. Impressively, the focus on collecting Power Cells and Precursor Orbs incentivised exploration without feeling repetitive or forced. The wondrous score and responsive controls also helped The Precursor Legacy offering an unforgettable experience.
But the most impressive aspect of Jak & Daxter is the fact Naughty Dog couldn't improve on the formula. Although there was nothing wrong with the follow-ups, the developers never managed to capture lightning in a bottle again.
The trilogy may have been remastered and released as a collection, but the original Jak & Daxter is just as a fantastic as the day it came out.
