20 Trailers So Bad They KILLED Video Games
11. Skull Island: Rise Of Kong
Keen to expand the Godzilla/King Kong shared universe, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures greenlit sequels, crossovers, TV spin-offs, an animated series, and of course, video game adaptations.
Although the Monsterverse as a whole has been hit-and-miss, there's no doubt Skull Island: Rise of Kong is the nadir. Developed by IguanaBee, the trailer for the licensed title shocked viewers, due to its horrible... everything. The flat textures, stiff character models, awkward animations, and barren environments resembled something from the Playstation 2 era. Although the King Kong brand carries expectation of scale and cinematic spectacle, the colossal kaiju came across as weightless and unthreatening.
Trailers are supposed to show games at their best, so it didn't fill anybody with confidence to see clipped animations, button-mashing combat, and enemies barely reacting to the titular beast.
Now, it's possible Rise of Kong was rushed to coincide with the animated series, Skull Island, which came out the same year. But considering Rise of Kong was labelled the worst game of 2023, it goes without saying the project should've been heavily delayed or canned entirely.
