20 Upcoming Video Games That Might Surprise You

8. Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival

With so many iconic horror franchises getting their own video games nowadays, Hellraiser has been long overdue its own treatment, though considering the more out-there, transgressive nature of Clive Barker's franchise, many questioned whether a game could truly do it justice.

Yet from what we've seen so far, Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival looks like it just might be the best piece of Hellraiser content since Hellbound: Hellraiser II came out almost 40 years (!) ago.

Refreshingly, Hellraiser: Revival isn't another asynchronous multiplayer game based on a hit horror IP - it's a single-player, narrative-driven first-person horror experience in which biker protagonist Aidan Lynch ventures into Hell to rescue his girlfriend Sunny from Pinhead.

While it's definitely a ringing double-endorsement that Barker himself helped write the story and original Pinhead actor Doug Bradley will reprise his role, the real selling point to many is Saber Interactive's claim that the game will hold nothing back in its depiction of graphic sex and violence.

As queasy as modern audiences can be about the fusion of such content, Hellraiser just isn't Hellraiser without its heightened, pulpy exploration of BDSM culture.

If Saber is being honest with audiences, this just might be one of the most laudably envelope-pushing mainstream games in years. Here's hoping.

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival releases on October 8.
