15. Metroids - Metroid Series

Another stalwart classic of the gaming medium, the Metroid series proved to be something rather unique and forward-thinking for the time. It may not seem like a lot nowadays, but the fact that players could explore a sprawling world that didn't confine them to simply moving left to right, was a real gamechanger. Pardon the pun. 

Throughout the journey, players will encounter numerous alien creatures that stand between them and progress. There's plenty of tough encounters to be had but its the titular Metroids themselves that prove to be the worst of the worst. 

Encountered fairly late in the game, these gelatinous parasites will make an immediate beeline for the player, latching onto them and draining them of all their precious resources. It can be hard to shake them off and you'll need to keep your distance in order to shoot them down, which is much easier said than done. 

As time has gone on, the Metroids have remained consistently threatening, with each appearance further cementing how important it is that Samus stops at nothing to wipe them out. Hey, the series is named after them for a reason.
