20 Video Game NPCs You CAN'T Afford To Lose

8. Wrex - Mass Effect

Mass Effect is well known for its vibrant cast of companions, featuring aliens and humans from all walks of life. Some of these companions are more likable than others, but this doesn’t mean that you’d necessarily want to give the less charming crew members up.

Even if the game gives you the option, as it does with Wrex.

Wrex is the Krogan bounty hunter that is simultaneously one of the grumpiest and the most beloved companions in the series. He has one of the best character arcs in the whole series, turning from a solider of fortune into a battle master commanding his whole species, but the thing is, to experience this amazing development, you first need to make sure Wrex stays alive.

In Mass Effect 1, there are several ways in which you can get Wrex killed, including separate instances of Shepard or Shepard’s teammates betraying the Krogan.

Of course, it’s nice that the game gives you more choices to make, but given how important Wrex is to the Mass Effect’s lore and how he can reappear in Mass Effect 2 and 3 as a companion, one anticlimactic death isn’t really worth the hours of interactions and developing storylines you’re going to lose.
