The Last of Us was one of the most acclaimed games of the PS3 era and remains a landmark in the potential of cinematic video game storytelling.

Though it basically told a complete story, fans nevertheless begged Naughty Dog for a follow-up, all while the studio remained coy about the prospect in the years following its 2013 release.

But at the December 2016 PlayStation Experience event, The Last of Us Part II was announced totally out of nowhere, with a gorgeous cinematic trailer revealing the returns of Ellie and Joel.

Considering that, for years, even the original game's own writer Neil Druckmann had questioned the necessity of a Last of Us sequel, many fans genuinely had no expectations for it ever coming to pass.

But it was now real, and it finally released in June 2020 to both enormous critical acclaim and hugely polarised responses from general players.

The only announcement Naughty Dog could make that has a hope in hell of topping this is, yes, The Last of Us Part III.
