20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)
10. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
The fifth (and to date, last) mainline entry in the MGS series is set during the 1980s and seemingly follows the legendary Big Boss after he wakes up from a 9-year coma. As Big Boss, codenamed Naked Snake, players create a brand-new organization called the Diamond Dogs and build up their base in between undertaking expansive missions in a fictionalized version of Afghanistan.
As is so often the case with Hideo Kojima projects though, all is not what it seems. Towards the end of the story it is revealed that the character you've been controlling for the whole game, the one who looks, sounds and acts like Big Boss, is not actually Big Boss at all. In one of the biggest twists in modern video game history, this whole time you've actually been playing as a medic who was transformed into Big Boss' body double.
The medic, codenamed Venom Snake, comes to this realisation when he plays a tape recording from the real Big Boss, and when he looks in the mirror, he sees his unaltered, original appearance. Big Boss pulled this off in order to deceive his enemies, and it worked. It was a stunning moment, as the player finds this out at the same time as Venom Snake does, with both having been tricked for the entirety of the story up to that point. MGS5's narrative is undeniably messy, but fans generally agree this twist was jaw-dropping.
