20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)
19. The Last of Us 2
In another case of blatant marketing misdirection, The Last of Us 2's pre-launch hype promised to continue the story of Joel and Ellie's fight against a zombie outbreak. The relationship between the two was a huge part of what made the first title so successful and fans couldn't wait to see their father-daughter dynamic grow and evolve. Joel was featured heavily in the game's marketing, including the now-infamous scene where he asks Ellie ''You think I'd let you do this on your own?'' so fans had absolutely no reason to expect what was waiting around the corner...
Joel's death, occurring right at the start of the story, was easily one of the most shocking and unexpected twists in any video game narrative. His brutal execution at the hands of new character Abby was made even more impactful when players were made to actually play as Abby for the entire second act, sending many players into meltdown. The Last of Us 2 was far more divisive than its predecessor at launch, and that was mainly down to this reason.
As time has gone on, however, and the dust has settled, discourse around the sequel has changed, and for many, it's now rightly revered as even stronger than the first instalment. Naughty Dog's deception has certainly not been forgotten about, particularly when it came to light that Joel was edited into scenes that he wasn't even a part of (with the above mentioned line ''You think I'd let you do this on your own?'' actually being said by Jesse in the final version), but the strength of the game has seen that brushed to the side in the grand scheme of its reputation.
