20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

13. Batman: Arkham Knight

It's no exaggeration to say that Rocksteady's Arkham series fundamentally changed superhero games, and wider action adventure titles, forever. Their innovative approach to combat and exploration proved to be a massive hit with fans, and each instalment got bigger and more ambitious. This culminated in 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight, which turned out to be the series' final mainline instalment to date.

Arkham Knight tells the story of the titular mysterious villain, whose identity is shrouded in secrecy. One thing immediately stands out though, whoever it is behind the mask seems to know Batman's strengths, weaknesses, and tactics, and he seems to hold some sort of personal grudge against the caped crusader.

Throughout the pre-launch marketing, Rocksteady specifically referred to the Arkham Knight as a brand-new character created for the purposes of the game. However, it would eventually be revealed in the narrative's latter stages that the Arkham Knight was none other than Jason Todd, AKA Batman's sidekick Robin. In the Arkham universe, Todd was captured and tortured by The Joker, and Batman believed him to be dead.

However, this was not the case. Todd survived, vowed to get revenge on Batman for being abandoned, and took on the Arkham Knight persona before teaming up with The Scarecrow. It was a cool plot twist, and the title was another hit for Rocksteady, so the lies told before launch around the character's identity were quickly forgotten after the dust had settled.
