15. Almost Half The Game - Secret Of Mana
It's a miracle Secret of Mana turned out as well as it did, considering Square's gorgeous RPG was designed for a console that doesn't exist. Despite being released for the Super Nintendo, Secret of Mana was tailored for the SNES CD-ROM add-on, which was an abandoned project between Nintendo and Sony.
When this system was cancelled, the developers realised that up to 40% of material would have to be tossed out to fit on a SNES cartridge. This news was upsetting for the developers, to the point where they strongly considered walking away from the whole thing.
There were meant to be multiple routes throughout the main campaign, which would've led to several endings (an idea that did make it into the sequel, Trials of Mana). Several dungeons and towns were discarded, and whole chunks of the plot were eliminated, which is why many story elements in the second-half feel rushed.
Although the 3D remake had the opportunity to add the excised elements, 2018's Secret of Mana was in essence the same game. This was a huge pity, as it would've been a dream come true to see how the original version could've turned out.
