Verdict: Since its 2009 alpha release, Minecraft has not only been a sales juggernaut like no other, but it's taken hold as an undeniable pop-culture phenomenon, such that a movie adaptation is currently in pre-production.
Released on a wide variety of platforms and promoting non-linear, creative gameplay, it's little surprise that the sandbox builder has become such a runaway success. Sure, the graphics aren't anything to shout home about, but the art style itself is pleasantly retro, and the sheer fun of creation no doubt makes it this generation's version of Lego.
