The colourfully-named guns of Borderlands 2 are just the most recent in a long line of video game weapons that fire homing bullets. However, this munition has existed in video games for decades, featuring in countless run-and-gun platformers of the Contra variety, space shooters, and those top-down plane shooters that would hoover the change out of your pocket in arcades. The homing bullet is now becoming a reality, but In a futile bid to distance the technology from its obvious source of inspiration, it's being referred to as the 'Guided Bullet' or - just to make it sound all consumer-friendly - the 'Smart Bullet'. These guided 'EXACTO' rounds rely on a special rifle that contains a guidance system. Once the system tracks the target, the sniper just has to fire the bulletin its not-too-general direction, and the bullet will follow it like an angry wasp with a particularly nasty sting. I can see a lot of retired old snipers getting up in arms that this takes some of the skill out of sniping, but to hell with them. Seeing as war's clearly going to stick around in the world for the foreseeable future, we may as well make it as clinical, automated and joyless as possible.
