1. The Bandaged Man Was The Real Snake - Metal Gear Solid V

2015 was a real year for narrative disappointment, as not only did we have Batman: Arkham Knight telling porky pies and Halo 5 failing to include its much talked about showdown between Master Chief and Spartan Locke, but MGS V didn't go into "The downfall of Big Boss" either.

Still, various trailers leading up to release included a cutscene where Big Boss lay on a table next to who was assumedly the new protagonist, as it was filmed from a first-person POV. Cut to Phantom Pain's intro and these shots were gone, now opening with our nondescript hero looking straight ahead.

Still, we're then made to create a custom character who's face gets changed to replicate that of Snake/Big Boss...

"A bit weird, but maybe it's for the online multiplayer?" we all thought, though following this a fully bandaged man calling himself 'Ishmael' guides you through the opening hospital level with the same voice as Snake, culminating in him being shot.

His existence isn't commented on or even acknowledged until the end of the game, whereupon you finally unlock the "Truth" mission, revealing that this bandaged chap was the real Big Boss all along.

Turns out that custom character you designed was you/a paramedic, and you'd been facially altered to mimic Snake, so the real Boss could escape and set up his Outer Heaven faction.

So much for the downfall - or even acknowledgement of - Big Boss.
