When it comes to making sequels in popular entertainment, iterating on a given video game formula is a double-edged sword. On the one hand it's far easier than in film or literature as the audience will - assumedly - just want more excuses to use your various mechanics and characters in a new setting. If it ain't broke, just add more levels. Or something.

Though on the other... there has to be enough changed and altered to even justify that full price tag a second time - something that in many cases, results in a 'followup' that distances itself too much.

Gaming is littered with sequels that got everything wrong and tanked their franchises in the process. The likes of Mass Effect Andromeda and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 all took their core components and repurposed them into complete messes, whereas the following titles kept everything the same... only to still leave a sour taste in the end.

It goes without saying that gamers are a hard bunch to please, but if we're coughing up the cash we'd like something substantial in return...
